Romania's Fashion Scene in 2026: A Growing Market, Cautious Shoppers and Designers Making Their Mark Abroad
Romania's apparel market is expanding steadily toward 2026, with womenswear leading the way and international brands flooding in. Yet local shoppers remain cautious and value-driven, while homegrown designers like SABINNE carry a sustainable, conceptual vision onto international runways.
Romania's fashion landscape is undergoing a quiet but meaningful transformation as it heads deeper into 2026. Behind the shop windows of Bucharest and the growing online marketplaces, a story is unfolding of a maturing industry, evolving consumer habits and a new generation of designers determined to make their voices heard well beyond the country's borders and onto the global stage.
A steadily growing market
The numbers paint a picture of consistent expansion. In 2024, the Romanian apparel retail market generated some 6.7 billion dollars in revenues, and the trajectory points firmly upward. Projections suggest that expenditure will climb to around 8.5 billion euros by 2028, a notable increase from the 6.9 billion euros recorded back in 2023, reflecting sustained appetite for clothing across the nation.
This growth is underpinned by solid fundamentals. The market has been expanding at an average annual rate of 3.3 percent, while the compound annual growth rate between 2019 and 2024 reached an impressive 8.7 percent. Fueling this momentum is a rise in household spending power, with disposable income in 2024 registering a healthy nominal increase of 9.0 percent among Romanian consumers.
Within the broader market, womenswear stands out as the clear driving force. This segment alone accounted for around 3.4 billion dollars in value, representing a commanding 51.3 percent share of the entire apparel market. The dominance of womenswear underscores where the industry's commercial heart lies and where much of the future investment is likely to be directed.
Cautious, value-seeking shoppers
Despite the encouraging headline figures, Romanian consumers remain notably careful with their money. Research indicates a persistent caution among shoppers, with more than two thirds of consumers failing to make a second purchase from a given retailer. Price scrutiny and a strong desire for value continue to dominate purchasing decisions as the country moves through 2026.
The way people shop is also shifting steadily toward digital channels. Online shopping is growing across the board, particularly for categories such as clothing, footwear, cosmetics and electronics. This transition presents both an opportunity and a challenge for retailers, who are increasingly advised to focus on converting digital interest into tangible sales, whether online or in physical stores.
Interest in fashion also appears to fluctuate rather than follow steady patterns. Search data reveals that queries for Romanian streetwear peaked in September 2025 and again in February 2026, while broader interest in Romanian fashion trends reached its height in August 2025. These fluctuating waves of attention suggest a dynamic but somewhat unpredictable consumer mood.
International brands move in
The Romanian market has proven increasingly attractive to foreign players eager to capture a slice of this expanding pie. Recent years have seen a wave of international entries, including the cosmetics brand Rituals, the Italian make-up label Kiko Milano, the German luxury sportswear house Bogner, and the value-focused chain Budmil, signaling growing confidence in the market's potential.
At the top end of the market, the established global giants continue to hold significant sway over Romanian wardrobes. Major players such as the Spanish group Inditex, the Swedish retailer H and M, and the Turkish chain LC Waikiki remain among the most influential forces shaping what Romanians wear, dominating the high street and shopping centers across the country.
Romanian design on the world stage

Beyond the commercial figures, it is the country's creative talent that offers the most exciting story. Romanian designers are increasingly earning recognition at international events, carrying a distinctive vision defined by sustainability and bold artistic expression. Their work is helping to reshape perceptions of Romanian fashion as something innovative and forward looking.
A prime example is the brand SABINNE, led by designer Sabina Georgescu, which showcased at the final evening of Ruse Fashion Week on the 3rd of April 2026. Her work is characterized by experimental structures, recycled materials and strong conceptual expression. As organizer Silvia Kabaivanova noted, the participating designers were chosen for their professionalism and their genuine commitment to creating sustainable fashion.
At the same time, Romania's rich heritage continues to inspire modern interest, with the traditional embroidered Romanian blouse, known locally as the ie, remaining a symbol of cultural pride and craftsmanship. As the industry balances commercial growth, cautious consumers and creative ambition, 2026 is shaping up to be a defining chapter for Romanian fashion at home and abroad.
